ABC Wednesday - Letter D

It looks like I may get away with one more post, before having to find a solution to my storage problem with Blogger.  I have to say here that Blogger has been very good to me.  This is a problem caused by my own photo-loading-greediness; I hope to be more selective in posting pictures in the future.  Many thanks to Daniel and Peter who put suggestions in comments, and to TexWisGirl, who took the time to send me an e-mail.  Your help was greatly appreciated!

Continuing on with this "D" post for ABC Wednesday, I begin with some D's spotted during our walk around town last Friday.  There were no real D sightings that I could spot in nature, unless you want to count this carefully lined-up photograph of a half-flower.
However, I did see some rather fun ones in our surroundings, this first noticed as I walked by BC Place.  There are letters outside to help people find their seating section, and Black Jack sat inside this lovely, blue "D" quite happily.
A crinkle of the treat bag, and she responded with a quizzical "Is that for me?" look.
We walked up some steps and admired the Percy Williams statue, erected for the 2010 Olympics in honour of the small (5'6" and 126 lbs at his absolute heaviest) man with a heart condition and a bad knee, who won Gold in the 100 and 200 metre dash (okay, sprint but dash works better for a D-post) at the 1928 Olympics in Amsterdam.  Perhaps, in recognition of the many brave athletes now giving their hearts and energy to the 2012 Olympics in London, England, this is a fitting time to remember him.  His story, titled "The Runt that Could,"is inspirational to read, although it ends terribly sadly with his taking his own life  It also works well with my "D" word for this post, a very simple but important one.  It is "DO!"  As a procrastinator with several small jobs that I have been delaying for months, I'm hoping that reminder will help and inspire me to "just DO those tasks."  Black Jack and Percy Williams are on a similar wave length, I think, in agreeing with that philosophy.
Here are a couple of other "D's that I noticed during our walk last Friday.  These lovely old door handles were inside a caged entrance to a decrepit building in a poor part of town, but I managed to get my camera between the links of the cage for the photograph.
This "D" was in a store window, but I no longer remember what street it was on, or what the store sold.  Nevertheless, the delightful creature (owl or cat, I couldn't decide) on top, and its dazzling design denote a  "D" shape that couldn't be disregarded.
Our last stop before heading home was at MacLeod's Books, clearly run by a dedicated and determined-to-please staff.  Honestly, I wandered in, with a vague idea of buying birthday gifts for my niece and nephew, but with little idea of where to start.  The kind lady had me describe their personalities and interests and then proceeded to select some of her favourite books.  i guess it couldn't be possible, but that lady seemed to be familiar with every single book in the place.  What a delight it was to spend time in that store.  If you are in the Vancouver area, I highly recommend a visit to MadLeod's.  Now, if only I can remember to DO it, and get those books in the mail!
Lastly, it has been my goal to note one musician and one artist whom I hadn't heard of before, for each letter of the alphabet in my ABC posts.  I am going to stray just slightly for the musician, in honour of my mother, who would have turned a very impressive age (we never dared give that information out publicly) yesterday.  Although this piece is not only not new, but in fact, is so familiar as to risk being cliched, it is one that brings her to mind every time I hear it.  It was one of her favourites and if one listens with a fresh ear, I think you will find that it continues to bring a definite and deep sense of peace.  Here is the link to Claude Debussy's Claire de Lune.

The artist, Helen Dahm,  is new  for me.  You can see samples of her work here.  I'm sorry to be a bit brief in a description of her, but this site will give you more information.

As always, thank you so much for stopping by the blog.  For other ideas for the letter "D" from bloggers around the world, do take some time to stop by the ABC Wednesday web site.

  1. Love those door handles, which almost have a D shape in themselves. I've never heard of MacLeods - I must look it up.

  2. I’m so glad about the statue being erected and that you wrote about it. I didn’t notice it during the 2010 Olympics so it’s good to hear about it now. Percy Williams’ story was so sad in the end … ending his life in his 70s when his mom was still alive and after all his achievements. Unbelievable that someone stole his gold medals. I wonder if they were ever recovered. I know it’s coincidental but the heart tag Black Jack is wearing seems so appropriate as she poses in front of Williams.
