Skywatch Friday - Episode 48

There haven't been dramatic sunrises or sunsets this past week, but the skies have been interesting to me nonetheless.  Here are a few of my favourites:

On Saturday, we drove over the Lions Gate Bridge from Vancouver to North Vancouver.
This was taken through the truck window.
In North Vancouver, Bill looked across the water to downtown Vancouver.  Half the sky appeared to be ready to drop bucketfuls of rain,
but there were blue patches to our right,
and the rain did not find us after all.
This is by False Creek near my apartment building.  A little bit of sun caught the corner of this building and made a star.
I zoomed in to get a better look at it.
A narrow path of gold stretched out from the front of this building.
From the walkway by the creek, a mottled sky lay just beyond the Cambie Bridge.
Cloud patterns and Rhododendrons competed for the camera's focus, but I think the Rhodo's  won.
I stopped in front of my building (a "mini" at 9 floors) and looked across the street to take this photo.  Originally, it was the sky I hoped to show, but in the end, it was perspective that surprised me.  How could a street lamp appear taller than that towering high-rise?
On Monday, we took the ferry to Victoria for a small holiday. Windy weather on Tuesday meant that there was almost a traffic jam of kitesurfers on the ocean.  For now, just a couple of the kites against..
fairly plain skies.  More pictures to follow in future posts.
On Wednesday, we took a short drive outside Victoria to Oak Bay.  I liked the cloud patterns,
and rock formations against the rippled ocean.
Wednesday evening, we watched George Bernard Shaw's Arms and the Man at McPherson Theatre in downtown Victoria.  Walking back to the house where we are staying, I noticed that even at 11:00 p.m., there were still blue patches of sky, shown up, perhaps, by the city lights.
I don't like using flash, so camera settings are always a challenge after dark.  I really struggled to capture this bridge in Beacon Hill Park, and in the end, was sort of happy with this unintentionally "impressionistic" shot.
Those are my skies for the week.  For more skies around the world, check out the Skywatch Friday web site.  Thanks for stopping by.

  6. Beautiful (as always)! I do love the lions Gate Bridge ... always fun to remind my grown son that the first time HE travelled across that bridge, he was in the middle of a stinky diaper change! LOL!

  7. I'm amazed how good the photos from the car window were - well done. Unbelievable cloud formations.I don't think we look up enough to check what's going on above us. Thanks for sharing.

  8. The gold that is reflecting off the highrise windows is magic. I think nighttime shots taken with a flash can sometimes wipe away the wonder that is in the darkness. :)

  12. What an extensive collection of sky! You’re such a committed sky watcher. I don’t like to use flash, either. You did it nicely to show the magical atmosphere of the night with such low light.

  13. Carol, great pictures of Victoria area, the peacock pictures are especially beautiful. I have never had much luck capturing the colour and detail of their feathers.
